Radiology Department Professional Development
The SCGH Radiology Department is offering formal, week-long PDL opportunities for doctors of all levels with an interest in pursuing a career in radiology, or who are wanting to better understand the specialty.
Facilitated by Dr Joy Lu, these elective placements allow JMOs to shadow radiologists for the week and learn what the role of a radiologist actually looks like. You’ll be exposed to plenty of formal and informal teaching and connect with mentors, helping you to decide if radiology is the right path for you.
These can be facilitated in any of the sub-departments within the radiology team:
General diagnostic and imaging radiology
The Neurological Intervention and Imaging Service of Western Australia (NIISWA) (see below)
Nuclear Medicine
Inclusion criteria:
North Metro Health Service employee
Any JMO level, including interns
No previous PDL elective in Radiology
An interest in pursuing a career in radiology
Exclusion criteria:
Previous PDL elective in radiology in WA hospital
Not employed by NMHS (unless interested in NIISWA, see below)
No placement can be arranged during school holidays or when the Monday is a public holiday
Structure of the PDL elective placement:
The placement will span from Monday to Friday, with an orientation by a consultant on your first day
Unfortunately these opportunities must span from Monday to Friday due to staffing, the observerships cannot occur if the Monday is a public holiday or the week occurs within school holidays for the same reason
You will be assigned to a Radiology Registrar, Fellow or Consultant in your area of interest who you will shadow for the week
You will have on-the-job learning by being a part of the team
You may attend any departmental teaching during your time in the department
How to apply:
Find a week that works for you and fits with the above criteria
Complete a leave application form and send it to medical workforce for approval
Then:
For general diagnostic and imaging department placements, contact joy.lu@health.wa.gov.au for confirmation that you can attend and to discuss your roster for the week
For NIISWA placements, please contact them through their external website http://niiswa.com/clinical.html
For nuclear medicine placements, contact kenny.sek@health.wa.gov.au
That’s it!
